Do you love your pet? You are not alone!

Recent research commissioned by Mars shows that 56% of people surveyed globally are pet parents, with more than 37% considering their pets the most important thing in their lives.

Mars estimates there are more than one billion pets in the world and growing!

The study surveyed over 55,000 people across 20 countries with insights from over 20,000 pet parents. They found cat ownership is more common than dog ownership with more men than women being cat owners.

The most popular dog breeds globally are Labrador (6%), Chihuahua (6%) and Golden Retriever (5%), while the most popular cat breeds are Persian (16%) British Shorthair (11%) and Siamese (9%).

Why do so many of us have pets?

The survey shows that dog owners value the unconditional love their dogs show, and cat owners love the entertainment and stress relief cats provide. Younger owners put the most importance on their relationship with their pets with 45% of Gen Z and 40% of Millennials compared to only 29% of Baby Boomers seeing their pets as the most important thing in their life.

It’s clear from the research that pet ownership contributes significantly to our sense of well-being and enriches our lives. Who can resist the enthusiastic welcome you receive every day from your dog, and the cuddles your cat gives you?

49% of those surveyed said having a dog completed their family and it’s clear to see that we view dogs differently from earlier generations.

Perhaps this has been the biggest shift in our attitudes to pets? After all, it used to be common for dogs to live outside but they are now seen as an important member of the family.

Is there a downside to pet ownership?

The study revealed that pet parents also face challenges. 32% feel guilty about leaving their dog or cat alone and only 42% of dog owners felt that their neighbourhoods were pet friendly. 26% of pet parents find travelling with their pets a worry.

There's no doubt that pet ownership is a joy but also brings responsibilities, so it’s important to do your research and take your time when considering owning a pet.

You not only have to consider if you have enough room for a pet, or the finances to look after them properly, you also have to honestly assess if you have enough time to devote to them. Many people have been working at home at least part of the week but some organisations are now asking workers to come to the office more often, so this is an important consideration.

You should also consider if your area is pet friendly. If you plan to let your cat out, will it be safe? Can you safely walk your dog locally and are there green spaces you can easily get to?

Although this will be an emotional decision you should also consider the cost of vet care and pet insurance.  The cost of insurance is a significant but crucial part of the decision you make, as it tends to increase as your pet gets older.
