For dog and cat Lifetime pet insurance cover you can choose between £1,000, £3,000, £4,500 and £7,000 worth of vet fee cover. The Lifetime Cover offers protection for illnesses and accidents that occur after the policy is taken out and provide lower limit cover for complementary treatments, physiotherapy, holiday cancellation, death, cremation and burial costs, contributions towards finding your pet if they are lost, and costs associated with foreign travel. The lower limits vary depending on the level of Lifetime Cover you buy. There is also £2,000,000 third Party Liability Cover included for dogs in case your pet harms another person or damages their property. The Post Office £7,000 Lifetime Cover product was given a 5 star rating by Defaqto and Moneyfacts in 2023. Post Office Insurance was also the winner of the Best Pet Insurance Provider at the YourMoney Personal Finance awards in 2024.

The Post Office Maximum Benefit Policy, available for dogs and cats, offers £2,000 vet fee cover for each of your pet's conditions or accidents until the limit is reached. Once the limit for a particular condition or accident is reached that condition will no longer be covered. Their Time Limited Pet Insurance policy covers each condition your pet develops up to £2,000 of vet fees or until 12 months has elapsed since your first start receiving treatment for that condition, whichever occurs first. Once the vet fee limit or the time limit is reached that condition will no longer be covered.
Maximum Benefit and Time Limited cover policies, available for dogs and cats, also offer lower limit cover for complementary treatments, theft or straying, holiday cancellation and a contribution to finding your pet.

Vet fees cover for rabbit policies is up to £2,000 per year. Pre-existing condition are not covered. All Lifetime Pet Insurance policies will cover your pet for life as long as you keep the policy in place and pay the premiums. The Lifetime policies also offer lower cover limits (that vary depending on level of vet fee cover policy you buy) for complementary treatments, physiotherapy, death from accident or illness, cremation and burial cost, offer a contribution to finding your pet if it is lost and pay if your pet is stolen or strays. The policies also cover boarding fees if you are hospitalised, holiday compensation if you have to cancel due to your pet's health and your pet is covered if you travel abroad for up to 90 days a year.
Maximum Benefit Cover (Dog and Cat only): Offers £2,000 vet fee cover for each new condition until the limit is reached. Once the limit is reached that condition is no longer covered. Lower limits cover certain treatments or types of claim.
Time Limited Cover (Dog and Cat only): Offers £2,000 vet fee cover for each new condition until the vet fee limit is reached or 12 months have elapsed from when you start treatment for that condition, whichever occurs first. That condition is then not covered. There are lower limits for some treatment types and types of claim.
For all policy types, certain dog breeds are not covered. For some dog breeds you can only start a new policy if they are less than 5 years old. Please check Terms and Conditions when choosing your policy.
Excess payments, or the amount you contribute to each claim is variable and depends on your pet's age.
Dogs are eligible to start their policy from 8 weeks of age up to their 8th birthday. Certain dog breeds are only eligible up to their 5th birthday. Cats can be covered from 8 weeks until their 10th birthday. Rabbits can be covered from 8 weeks to their 5th birthday. Once insured you can continue your pet's insurance for life.
You are covered for accidents after the first 3 days and for illnesses after the first 14 days of your policy. If you can provide evidence that your pet is previously insured up to the start date of the policy, this waiting period is waived.
