Whenever I have bought a puppy I have had some comfort in the fact that the first 5 weeks they are covered by the KC free insurance. I have never bothered to take out my own insurance policy until they are 3/4 weeks of age. I have never had an ill puppy luckily until my latest one. She got a UTI in the 3rd/4th week of the free cover. I have 4 dogs so buying the KC insurance isn't an option as it's too expensive.
The new insurance won't cover the treatment as it's classed as pre-existing and the KC insurance have emailed me today to say they will only pay the first vet treatment less the excess so I'm getting £26.05! If I buy another puppy in the future and I get handed a letter saying I'm getting 5 weeks free cover I'll tear it up and throw it in the bin and simply buy insurance straight away from a decent company.

I too have been caught out by this before as well. Puppy came with the 5 weeks free Kennel Club Insurance. I wasn't 'insurance savvy' 20 years ago like I am now. Took pup for a quick check of wax in her ear; nothing untoward and no treatment needed. about 6 months later, fur started falling out in patches. She was diagnosed with atopic dermatitis - but ears and skin are linked so it was classed as a pre-existing condition and wasn't covered. A skin condition like that is VERY EXPENSIVE to pay out for. It's just a con to get people to stay with the Kennel Club, which is not the best deal out there whatsoever. I think this should be highlighted by anyone who has fallen foul of it as it can cost thousands which often people simply don't have.
