I have had all my dogs insured with Animal Friends. They have always payed out and were amazing when Jamie got cancer.
The main thing is because they are lower priced cover you need to read your terms and conditions for your policy so you know what you are covered for, having worked in Travel insurance for 10 years you learn to read your policy wording and AFI have always payed out in line with their policies which I have read and understand .
I think some of their customers don't read their policies and are quick to blame Animal Friends when they won't pay out on a pre-existing condition which obviously related to their claim or for dental treatment.
